Hockey Club
Five straight wins show what we can do
Men’s hockey at Cuth’s has definitely developed in the past 12 months. Under the reign of Ian Stoneham, last season had both its successes and failures. Our goal of promotion to the Premier league was not fulfilled, but nevertheless we proved that we had ability. Hammering Trevs A 5-1 (who went on to finish top of the table) was a bittersweet victory: we knew we should have been standing in their shoes.
I had great ambitions for the hockey club when taking over the role of men’s captain at the start of the academic year: a larger squad size to avoid last minute stand-ins, finalised over a drink in Klute the night before; promotion to the Premiership; progress beyond the first round of the Trophy Cup. These aspirations were soon muted when Marys A thrashed us 5-0 in our first game of the season.
The twist in the story is that we have not lost since and have racked up 5 wins and a draw in the last 6 league games. We are currently second in the table and promotion hopes are alive and well. An outstanding performance in our first round match in the Trophy Cup against Chads A (winning 2-0) has meant things are looking very promising. We are nearing the end of term 2 and possible outcomes are still very open-ended; I hope that next years newsletter will bring good news.
